![]() Bride of ethnic Dao in Northern Vietnam The Dao ethnicity in Vietnam amounts to half a million people who live all around the country’s northern mountainous areas and midlands. |
The various groups of Dao, such as Dao Tien, Dao Quan Chet, Dao Thanh Phan, Dao Dai Ban and Rouge Dao, can be easily distinguished through their rich and diverse clothing traditions. Bridalwear in particular is unique and impressively adorned, and remains a key cultural highlight of many Dao groups.
In ancient times, the Dao mastered cotton cultivation, weaving and dyeing. Young girls are still taught weaving and embroidery by their mothers at a tender age and practice their skills well into adolescence. Leisure time for many girls in Dao villages revolves around chatting while practicing their weaving and embroidery skills. When they are ready to marry, young Dao women traditionally make their own wedding dress. This outfit not only helps make the bride beautiful and glamorous on her special day, but also serves as source of pride for herself and her family. ![]() |
