Cai Rang Floating market
No
trip to Can Tho would be complete without a visit to the
Cai Rang Floating market. Twenty minutes after leaving
Ninh Kieu Wharf, the roar of large engines marked the arrival at the floating market. A small boat peddling breakfast approached a large boat, whose owner was a sun-tanned and sturdy woman. The peddler scooped noodle soup from an aluminum cauldron into a terra-cotta bowl.
This ritual of food transaction between sellers and buyers repeated on throughout the morning, amid peals of laughter. The whole market was ebullient. Time and again, small sampans plied to and fro between big stationary boats while familiar glances were exchanged between all. The market lasts for 1km and stretches 1.5km around the Tet holiday. Of all the floating markets in the Mekong Delta, Cai Rang (meaning Crocodile Teeth) is the biggest. This is partly due to the fact that Cai Rang weather conditions are naturally favorable. The good weather also explains how this area maintains the largest granary in the country. |
