How Ha Nhi people celebrate their traditional Tet
Living in the northern mountainous province of Dien Bien, the Ha Nhi ethnic minority group is one of a few Vietnamese ethnic groups who celebrate both the Kinh’s Lunar New Year Festival and their traditional festivals. The first dragon day in December begins their traditional New Year festival (Tet), which fell on December 11 this year.
The first day of Ha Nhi’s Tet is for worshipping their ancestors. Accordingly, each Ha Nhi family is customary to kill a pig which they have raised before as pork is supposed to be the must-have offering to ancestors. Particularly, the liver of the pig is very important as it is used to be examined to see whether the New Year is a good or bad for the family. For worshipping ancestors, the head of the family will prepare a food tray of boiled pork, a bowl of rice, and a piece of ginger and three cups of wine and then offer it to their ancestors respectfully. If you visit the Ha Nhi people right on their traditional Tet, you can feel how hospitable and friendly they are as they always invite lots of relatives and friends to their home to co-enjoy Tet. reetings and wishes. |
After happily sharing sumptuous meals, everyone will flock to the communal space to take part in dancing and singing performances till the late night.
