National Ca Tru festival takes place in August
In order to
preserve the UNESCO-recognized intangible cultural heritage,
Hanoi will be in
charge of celebrating a
national Ca Tru (ceremonial singing) festival in August.
Ca Tru, a traditional folk song of Vietnam, also known as Hat A Dao which is an ancient type of music featuring female vocalists. It is a complex form of poetry found in Northern Vietnam using lyrics written in traditional Vietnamese poetic forms. Ca Tru was recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in need of urgent safeguarding in October, 2009. ![]() Enjoying Ca Tru performance in Hanoi Normally, a group of Ca Tru comprise of three performers: a female singer who uses breathing techniques and vibrations to create unique sounds while playing the clappers or striking a wooden box, along with two instrumentalists who produce the deep tones of a three-stringed lute and the strong sounds of a ceremonial drum. Firstly appeared in the North in 15th century, Ca Tru was flourished until the early 20th century. Since then, it has lost popularity to imports of modern recreational forms and cultural activities. Ca Tru traditional folk song is now practiced in 15 provinces and cities throughout Vietnam. (Source VNA)
